Psalm 4
There's a Chinese Proverb that says, "A gem cannot be polished without friction, nor a man perfected without trials."
That's kind of annoying, isn't it? Wouldn't we all rather our lives resemble a beautifully polished gemstone without the painful process of life's trials?
Now, we know that life's trials can't perfect anyone. However, surrendering them to God and seeking His perspective, guidance, and direction in the midst of trials does help us grow into people who think, talk, and act like Jesus.
When we have experienced some of these trials and come out the other side, we gain valuable perspective on life and God's faithfulness. We gain a sense of confidence that comes from experiencing God in action, not just words on a page. A quiet trust builds within us. Faith grows.
It's from this perspective that David writes the Fourth Psalm.
Questions:
When have you experienced God's relief in the midst of distress?
What did that experience teach you about God?
Bonus thought:
If you have trouble sleeping at night, try revisiting this Psalm before you go to bed. Slowly read these words and make them your own. Repeat verse 8 a few times as a statement of faith and a reminder to yourself that God is keeping you safe, even while you sleep.
