Psalm 1

It’s finally Spring here in Edmonton. This means that we best not blink, or we’ll miss the beauty of the trees in full blossom. The picture we see in Psalm 1 is of a tree that is planted by the riverbank, and the leaves never wither, and it bears fruit each season. Sounds like an anomaly. What an amazing picture of a tree full of life all year round. And the writer is comparing this tree to a righteous person who delights in God’s word and who meditates on it day and night. Imagine being that full of life and consistently enjoying the promises of God.

As you reflect on Psalm 1, which contrasts the righteous person with the wicked, think about the many blessings of walking in God’s ways. What practical steps can you take to daily align your actions with God’s will?

1 Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers. 2 But they delight in the law of the LORD, meditating on it day and night. 3 They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do.

4 But not the wicked! They are like worthless chaff, scattered by the wind. 5 They will be condemned at the time of judgment. Sinners will have no place among the godly. 6 For the LORD watches over the path of the godly, but the path of the wicked leads to destruction.
