Philippians 3:20
20 But we are citizens of heaven, where the Lord Jesus Christ lives. And we are eagerly waiting for him to return as our Savior.”
We all embark on journeys towards specific destinations at some point in our lives. In 2003, David Facey, a journalist from "The Sun" tabloid in London, had his travel plans arranged by his office to cover the Masters in Augusta, Georgia. Despite following the instructions provided by his office, he encountered several mishaps along the way. Firstly, he mistakenly flew to Augusta, Maine instead of Augusta, Georgia. Then, upon arriving in Georgia, he discovered that his hotel reservation was actually in Portland, Oregon. This mix-up reminds us that even when we know our destination, others may unknowingly disrupt our journey.
This situation prompts us to reflect on the question of our life's direction and the assistance we receive on our path. In Philippians 3:20, Paul contrasts earthly citizenship with heavenly citizenship, stating that believers in Christ belong to a heavenly kingdom that surpasses the earthly realm. This highlights the significance of our allegiance and identity lying in God's kingdom rather than any earthly nation or system.
The concept of heavenly citizenship emphasizes that believers are part of a spiritual community with a shared identity and purpose. It underscores the transformative power of the gospel, which unites people from diverse backgrounds into the body of Christ. As citizens of heaven, we are called to live according to the values and principles of God's kingdom, even while residing on earth.
The verse continues by expressing the anticipation of believers for the return of Jesus Christ, the Savior from heaven. This anticipation reflects the hope and expectation within the Christian faith for the fulfillment of God's kingdom. It motivates believers to live with faith, perseverance, and purpose, knowing that their ultimate destiny lies in the heavenly realm.
As you reflect on your own journey, consider your destination. Where are you going in life? Are you living with a heavenly perspective, aligning your actions and choices with the values of God's kingdom? Take a moment to evaluate your allegiance and identity. Are you prioritizing earthly citizenship or heavenly citizenship? How can you live with greater faith, perseverance, and purpose in light of your ultimate destination in heaven?
