Mark 12:41-44

41 Jesus sat down near the collection box in the Temple and watched as the crowds dropped in their money. Many rich people put in large amounts. 42 Then a poor widow came and dropped in two small coins.[a]

43 Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I tell you the truth, this poor widow has given more than all the others who are making contributions. 44 For they gave a tiny part of their surplus, but she, poor as she is, has given everything she had to live on.”

Mark 12:41-44  NLT

It can be easy to get enamoured by what is big and what gets the spotlight according to whatever happens to be trending at any given time. There is a pressure to conform to see value as our culture identifies it and to pursue popularity based on what gets the most attention.

If this were the case, those stepping up to make donations that would have been sizeable and significant in the eyes of the public would be the heroes of this story. Yet, here among the many wealthy individuals contributing large amounts, a poor widow stands out by giving just two small copper coins. While her offering might seem insignificant compared to the larger donations, Jesus recognizes the true value of her gift.

Jesus uses this moment to teach His disciples—and us—about the heart of giving. The rich gave out of their abundance, contributing what they could spare without much personal sacrifice. In contrast, the widow gave all she had, demonstrating a profound trust in God to provide for her needs.

This story reminds us that the value of our generosity is not measured by the amount but by the heart and sacrifice behind it. True giving is not about how much we give, but how much we are willing to trust God and give out of love and devotion. The widow's offering, though small, was a significant act of faith and surrender.

As we reflect on our own generosity, let us reflect on the attitude and heart with which we give. Let us strive to give with a heart like the widow's—full of faith, love, and trust in God's provision.

“God, I trust your care and provision over my life. Help me to give in a way that reflects this trust. Help me to not get caught up in thinking of value as the culture around me does, but to know that I truly cannot out-give you and your goodness towards me. Amen.”
