Mark 10:46-52
46 Then they reached Jericho, and as Jesus and his disciples left town, a large crowd followed him. A blind beggar named Bartimaeus (son of Timaeus) was sitting beside the road. 47 When Bartimaeus heard that Jesus of Nazareth was nearby, he began to shout, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”
48 “Be quiet!” many of the people yelled at him.
But he only shouted louder, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”
49 When Jesus heard him, he stopped and said, “Tell him to come here.”
So they called the blind man. “Cheer up,” they said. “Come on, he’s calling you!” 50 Bartimaeus threw aside his coat, jumped up, and came to Jesus.
51 “What do you want me to do for you?” Jesus asked.
“My Rabbi,” the blind man said, “I want to see!”
52 And Jesus said to him, “Go, for your faith has healed you.” Instantly the man could see, and he followed Jesus down the road.
Meet Bartimaeus: a blind man who, despite his condition and the discouragement of others, boldly calls out to Jesus for mercy. His faith and determination to seek Jesus' help, despite the obstacles, are an awesome example of the kind of faith that pleases God.
Bartimaeus' cry for mercy was not just a request for physical healing but an acknowledgment of Jesus' divine authority and compassion. Don’t you just love the persistence of his faith? When others tried to silence him, he shouted even louder, undeterred by critics.
Bartimaeus' simple yet profound request, "Rabbi, I want to see," is met with a life-changing miracle. Jesus attributes his healing to his faith, saying, "Go, your faith has healed you."
This encounter reminds us that our faith in Jesus can overcome any barrier. It encourages us to be bold in our prayers and to persist in seeking Jesus, no matter the obstacles or the voices of doubt we may face.
“Jesus, have mercy on us. We need you and invite your power to be at work in our lives and through our lives. Help us to not yield to voices of doubt but to come to you with confidence in your love for us and your ability to do above and beyond what we could ask or imagine. Amen”
