James 3:1-2
Perhaps more than ever in human history, the digital age has amplified the power behind our words. Controlling our tongues extends beyond spoken words to the way we communicate online. With the rise of social media, blogs, and other digital platforms, Christians can have incredible influence to leverage. But with that influence comes a heightened responsibility to be mindful of what we say and share.
Whether in teaching roles or casual conversations, we must be intentional about how we communicate, ensuring that our words are truthful, loving, and reflect Jesus. Quick, unkind, and unwise comments or careless posts can lead to division and confusion and hurt.
1 Dear brothers and sisters, not many of you should become teachers in the church, for we who teach will be judged more strictly. 2 Indeed, we all make many mistakes. For if we could control our tongues, we would be perfect and could also control ourselves in every other way.
James 3:1-2
James recognizes that we all make mistakes, especially with our words. In 2024, it is easy to speak or post without fully considering the consequences. To counter this, we need accountability. Surrounding ourselves with other believers who can provide honest feedback and correction can help us grow in this area. Whether through small groups or mentoring relationships, accountability is key to learning how to better control our tongues and honour God in how we speak or type.
“Jesus, may the words of my mouth be pleasing to you and uplifting to those on the other side of them. Help me leverage any influence I have to bring you glory and serve people well with my words. Amen”
