Isaiah 59:9-10
" Therefore justice is far from us, and righteousness does not overtake us; we hope for light, and behold, darkness, and for brightness, but we walk in gloom. We grope for the wall like the blind; we grope like those who have no eyes; we stumble at noon as in the twilight, among those in full vigour we are like dead men. "
From the moment we wake up to the moment we go to sleep, light surrounds us. The gentle rays of the morning sun peek through our windows, warming our faces and signalling the start of a new day. Throughout the day, we rely on artificial lights to guide us, whether it's the glow of our computer screens, the fluorescent bulbs in our offices, or the headlights that illuminate our path as we drive home at night. Light is an ever-present and essential part of our lives.
But amidst all the physical light we encounter, there is a greater Light that surpasses any earthly illumination. In Isaiah 59:9-10, we are reminded of this truth: "Therefore justice is far from us, and righteousness does not overtake us; we hope for light, and behold, darkness, and for brightness, but we walk in gloom. We grope for the wall like the blind; we grope like those who have no eyes; we stumble at noon as in the twilight, among those in full vigour we are like dead men."
These verses describe a world engulfed in darkness and despair. Despite our longing for light and brightness, we find ourselves walking in the gloom, stumbling in the twilight. We are like blind people groping for a way out, unable to find true justice and righteousness. It is a bleak and hopeless picture.
But there is hope. Amid this darkness, a greater Light shines forth. The prophet Isaiah continues to speak of this Light in Isaiah 60:1-2: "Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you. For behold, darkness shall cover the earth, and thick darkness the peoples; but the Lord will arise upon you, and his glory will be seen upon you."
The Light that Isaiah speaks of is none other than the presence of God Himself. It is His glory that pierces through the darkness and brings hope to the hopeless. This Light is not limited by physical boundaries or constraints. It is a spiritual Light that illuminates our souls and guides us on the path of righteousness.
Reflection Question: As you consider the presence of physical light in your daily life and the greater Light of God's presence, reflect on the darkness that may be surrounding you. In what areas of your life do you feel overwhelmed by darkness and despair? How can you invite the Light of God's presence into those areas? Take a moment to seek His guidance and ask Him to shine His Light upon you, bringing hope, clarity, and righteousness to every aspect of your life.
