Colossians 1:17
“He existed before anything else,
and he holds all creation together.”
Nestled in the picturesque city of Pisa, Italy, the Leaning Tower of Pisa stands as one of the most recognizable and iconic structures in the world. Its distinct tilt has made it a symbol of architectural wonder and human perseverance. However, what truly captivates the imagination is the fact that this magnificent structure is held together by a single pillar, and if that pillar were to be removed, the entire building would collapse.
Construction of the Leaning Tower of Pisa began in 1173, but due to a flawed foundation and the soft soil on which it was built, the tower began to lean during its construction. As the tower continued to rise, the tilt increased, causing concern among architects and engineers. In an attempt to rectify the tilt, subsequent floors were built with one side taller than the other, but this only exacerbated the lean.
Despite the tower's precarious state, it has managed to defy gravity and remain standing for centuries due to the unwavering support of a single pillar. This central pillar, known as the bell tower's core, runs through the center of the tower and provides the crucial stability necessary to counterbalance the lean. It acts as a lifeline, holding the structure together and preventing its collapse.
Colossians 1:17 states, "He is before all things, and in him all things hold together." This verse is part of a larger passage where the apostle Paul is exalting the supremacy and preeminence of Christ. In this particular verse, Paul emphasizes two key aspects of Christ's nature and role.
Firstly, Paul affirms that Christ is before all things. This statement speaks to the eternal nature of Christ. It echoes the scriptural truth that Jesus Christ, as the Son of God, existed before the creation of the world. In John 1:1-3, it is said, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made." This verse highlights the divine origin and eternal existence of Christ, who was present before all creation.
Secondly, Paul declares that in Christ, all things hold together. This statement speaks to the sustaining power and control of Christ over the created order. The universe, with all its complexities and intricacies, is upheld and maintained by the power of Christ. He is the cosmic force that keeps everything in its proper place and functioning according to His divine plan. Without Christ's sustaining power, everything would fall into chaos and disarray.
In a world that often feels uncertain and unstable, the truth of Christ's eternal existence and sustaining power provides us with a firm foundation. It reminds us that, no matter the challenges we face, Christ remains in control. It encourages us to trust in His wisdom, guidance, and provision, knowing that He holds all things together for our good and His glory.
Reflection question: How does the truth of Christ's preeminence and sustaining power impact your recognition of His sovereignty and authority in your life, and how does it shape your submission to His lordship and alignment with His divine will?
