Amos 5:4-15

Which came first, the chicken or the egg?

Maybe you’ve heard people debate that question. As Christians, we have moved on from the chicken and the egg and now ask another question, “Which matters most – pleasing God with who we are, or pleasing God by what we do?”

What do you think? Does who we are matter most? Or is it what we do that is more important? Is it who we are on the inside or is it the help that we give to others? What matters more to God?

The answer is both. Amos delivered God’s message against the Israelites because they had failed to live up to God’s expectations. They failed to have proper hearts, and they failed to have proper actions.

How can we have both a right heart and a changed life? Amos told the people to “seek me (God) and live.” When we have a right heart before God and a desire to please Him, our lives will change, too. A person who loves God with all their heart will please God with their actions.

Ask God to help you grow closer to Him so you can love Him more through what you do.
