Acts 1:1-8
Have you ever wanted to be a superhero?
You know, like being faster than a speeding bullet. More powerful than a locomotive. Be able to leap tall buildings in a single bound.
It sounds pretty exciting, but what would we even do with those abilities anyway?
Although Superman's life and abilities may not be attainable for us, living a supernatural life certainly is.
This Sunday is a special day on the calendar. It's Pentecost Sunday. This is the day we remember and celebrate God sending the Holy Spirit to take up residence within the followers of Jesus for the first time. This extraordinary experience wasn't a one-time event; it continues today in the lives of Christ's followers around the globe.
Jesus makes it clear what we're to expect to happen when we're filled with the Holy Spirit. We will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon us and we will be Jesus' witnesses in our city, region, nation, and throughout the entire world.
Thank God that even though He asks us to do challenging things with our lives, He doesn't leave us on our own to accomplish them. He provides His spirit to empower us for the task at hand.
1 In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach 2 until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen. 3 After his suffering, he presented himself to them and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God. 4 On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. 5 For John baptized with[a] water, but in a few days you will be baptized with[b] the Holy Spirit.”
6 Then they gathered around him and asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?”
7 He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
Where do you have the opportunity to share the love and truth of Jesus (witness) in your life this week?
